Last week's meeting
President Ray Darby welcomed us to the 1623rd meeting of the club. Newest member, Josh Sudbury, gave the invocation and led us in saying the pledge of allegiance to the flag.
Randolph Reeves introduced three former Rotary Ambassadorial scholars --- Dr. Tom Bryant, Dr. Randall Rushing and Tammy Williamson. Other guests included District Governor Mike Moffatt, Charlotte Neal and the Neal's friend, Babbie Lovitt.
Sgt. at Arms John May always keeps us guessing as he goes about the work of raising more money for the Scholarship Fund. At this meeting he announced that R. E. Linkous had arranged a deal to pay for missed meetings. The same was true for Al Hollingsworth and Jack Robinson. These three gentlemen agreed to pay $5.00 for each of their missed meetings. Sgt. at Arms John asked if there were any others who should pay fines for missed meetings or other club infractions. He said those people would be let off the Wheel in honor of the holiday season!
Treasurer Bill Eddings raised a nice sum for the Floyd's Fund Scholarship account when he announced he had sold $117.00 worth of raffle tickets at the meeting. Half of that amount immediately went into the Scholarship Fund account and the other half was added to the Floyd's Fund Winner's Pot. The Winner's Pot had $457.00 waiting for the lucky winner of the raffle---IF---that person could draw the Queen of Hearts from the 39 cards remaining in the deck. The lucky raffle ticket was #682252 that was held by Jean Patterson. But, when Jean drew a card from the 39 remaining she managed to pick the four of spades. The first drawing for the Winner's Pot will be held at the next meeting on January 8. Going into that meeting there will be $457.00 in the Winner’s Pot plus half of the amount raised in that day's raffle. This is beginning to get interesting. Will you purchase the next lucky raffle ticket to get your chance to take home the contents of the Winner's Pot? You will have an opportunity to do just that IF you purchase tickets!
Bob Neal, program coordinator for the week introduced Dr. Tom Bryant and Dr. Randall Rushing both former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars. For more details about the program, read the following news release that we sent to the Commercial Appeal on Dec. 22.
News release:
Three Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars attended the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Memphis Central at Chickasaw Country Club on Friday, Dec. 18 to talk about their experiences as Rotary ambassadorial scholars and to receive special awards from the Memphis Central club.
Dr. Tom Bryant, associate professor, department of music at Rhodes College, Dr. Randall Rushing, interim director of the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis and Ms. Tammy Williamson, Spanish language teacher at the Hutchinson School in Memphis were the recipients of alumni pins from the Rotary Foundation. Mike Moffatt, Governor of the Rotary district covering western Tennessee and northern Mississippi, made the presentation.
Both Dr Rushing and Dr. Bryant spoke to the Rotary club about their experiences as Ambassadorial Scholars. This Rotary program provides students with three- to six-month and one- or two-year scholarships to study abroad, serving as ambassadors of goodwill.
Dr. Rushing sang several arias accompanied by Dr Bryant, pianist. Selections included the immortal “Serenade” by Franz Schubert which Dr. Rushing sang in German and “Danny Boy” an English ballad by Frederick Weatherly.
