Christmas Party and Silent Auction report
The dinner party and auction were held on Saturday, December 12 at the University Club. The silent auction is one of two major fund-raisers in the year and the 2009 edition did not disappoint. Club treasurer Bill Eddings reports that our auction brought in over $5,000.00! Not bad for a small club like ours. Thanks to everyone who donated auction items and to everyone who bid high and often on the items up for bid. A special thank you to Bill who served as the auction chairman. This is a task that requires a lot of hard work and many hours dedicated to ensuring that we will have a successful auction. If you haven't served in this capacity (I did for five or six consecutive years!) you probably will never understand all the behind-the-scenes work involved but I am sure you appreciate everything Bill does for our club. Why not take a moment to personally thank him for his dedication to our club and the Rotary organization?
I missed the party because of serious illness in my extended family. But Bill reports that William and Betty Jo Dulaney were once again in attendance and also in rare form as they spent mega bucks at the event. Not only were they high bidders for a week's stay in Bill Matthews' Florida condo they also (in Bill E's words) “were high bidders on a passel of other items”.
A special card of thanks also goes to Jim and Joseph Crone who were very successful in obtaining items from retail donors. For example, Home Depot donated in excess of $400.00 in value of tools and more.
Auctioning Marty Petrusek's dinner for six was fun and the prize sold for $450.00 to co-bidders Larry Conn and Randolph Reeves.
A note from President Ray
I'd like to thank everyone who came out to the Rotary Christmas party – it was a great success and a good time was had by all. Special thanks goes out to Jim Crone for organizing the event, Joseph Crone for getting so many great auction items, Laura House for preparing and mailing the invitations, Bob & Charlotte Neal for the table decorations and Bill Eddings for all his work in managing the auction items. Thanks, too, to everyone who donated auction items and everyone who bid high to win!
Ray
Krissie Heuer receives the Paul Harris Fellow award
A highlight of the evening during the Christmas party was the awarding of the Paul Harris Fellow designation to Krissie Heuer who has served as Bill Matthews' office manager and “right arm” for a number of years. Krissie has given her time and talent to donate artistic items year after year to our club's silent auction. She has worked tirelessly for the past several years coordinating our annual charity golf tournament. So it seemed natural that our board of directors would vote unanimously to bestow the coveted Paul Harris award upon Krissie.
The only difficult part was keeping the wonderful news from Krissie. She is on the list to receive our weekly Rotarian so we could not publish the board's decision in our newsletter until after Krissie was given the award at our Christmas party. How hard it was to “keep the lid” on the story for the past couple of months!
But now that Krissie has received the award we will offer our most heartfelt and sincere congratulations to an outstanding lady who certainly deserves the highest award the Rotary organization has to offer. Well done, Krissie!
Your editor spoke with Krissie on Tuesday morning. In her words, “I am so honored to receive this award. It never occurred to me that I was being considered as a Paul Harris Fellow. In fact, when Bill Sr. was called to the front of the room on Saturday evening I thought that he was going to receive special recognition from the club. When I found out it was me, I was absolutely floored!”
Krissie plans to attend our meeting this Friday to share her appreciation with all of us.
Floyd's Fund winner's pot
There is now $398.00 in the Winner's Pot (and the equivalent amount has already been deposited into the club's Scholarship Fund) as we go into ticket sales for this week's raffle. At our last meeting Josh Sudbury held the winning raffle ticket #682159. Josh thought positive thoughts but wasn't able to draw the winning card. Instead he picked the eight of diamonds. So, as we have been saying for a number of weeks--- “The Queen of Hearts is what we are all looking for and the lady continues to elude the draw. “ There are now 39 cards remaining in the deck which makes for better odds of drawing the Queen of Hearts. Be sure to purchase a handful of tickets at this week's meeting. After all, this is the last meeting of 2009 so let's all do our part to make the winner's pot (and the Scholarship Fund) grow by leaps and bounds before the New Year!
