Sign up for the party and auction
When you go to our club's Christmas party, be sure to bring your friends and your checkbook. There will be lots of items to interest you at the silent auction. The party and auction will take place on December 4 at 7 p.m. at the Nineteenth Century Club on Union Avenue.Bring your appetite as well. Piggly Wiggly will do the catering, thanks to Rick James. According to Bill Eddings, you can look forward to shrimp, beef tenderloin, twice-baked potatoes, salad, rolls, coffee, iced tea, and some sort of chocolate dessert.
Laura House, who prepared and mailed the invitations, points out that each member is expected to bring either an appetizer or a dessert. Those with last names starting with A-L should bring appetizers and those with M-Z should bring desserts.
Jean Patterson still has not received word from some of you. She needs to know if you’re going to attend, whether you will have any guests, and what items you plan to donate to the silent auction.
Even if you don’t attend, get into the spirit by making donations for the auction.
If you’re still one of Jean’s Shy Guys, get off her shy list by contacting her today and giving her the information she needs.

Marty’s colossal feat (feet?)
Marty Petrusek
had a rough time walking that marathon. "My body was fine, but my feet hurt," he said. He had to stop with four miles to go to wrap his feet before he resumed walking. "It took me about seven hours to cover the distance." Now that he’s in shape from all the work he’s done, Marty intends to stay that way.About 800 men and women took part in the Walk which raised close to $40,000 for the Haiti hospital. Our club has contributed about $1000 of that total. If you have not yet matched Marty’s feat (feet?) with a $26 donation, it’s time you did.
The two groups that volunteered to go to Haiti had to postpone their trips. There was too much violence around the hospital after Haiti was devastated by hurricanes.
Last week’s meeting
Lee Whipple, calling attention to Veterans Day in his invocation, asked us to remember the warriors, the peace keepers and the veterans.
Randolph Reeves did it again – he won the weekly drawing ($45) for the second straight week. He turned the money over to the Haiti hospital mission immediately. Doyle Lemons sold $90 worth of tickets. In a second drawing, Leroy Dahler won a one-day ticket to next year’s FedEx-St. Jude Golf Classic.
Chris McDermott introduced our only guest – Ham Smythe of the Downtown club.
Carlton Smith spun a 5 on The Wheel again. That started a parade to Treasurer Bill Eddings by Al Hollingsworth, Jim Crone, Chris McDermott, Mike Robbins and Larry Conn.
Andy Peters introduced our speaker. Dave Luiken presided.

Personal notes
Past President Diane Hunt, now legally blind, is fully retired and living in Florida. She can read, but she needs a magnifier.John and Edna Bennett are getting ready to move again – to another home they built for themselves. It’s about half a mile down the road from their present home, the site of several Christmas parties. "Our new home is only about half as big as the one we’re in now," said John. "But it’s big enough for a Christmas party."
As of last week, 13 of our members had made their $100 annual donation to the Rotary International Foundation, according to Chris McDermott. Our club goal is for every member to give $100. Not only will this money finance important international projects – it will also help us add more Paul Harris Fellows.
Southwind dream now a reality
Southwind, home of the FedEx-St. Jude Golf Classic, has a fabulous new look. Phil Cannon, ttournament director for the Classic, showed us the old and the new last week, with the help of Todd Garten.Seven holes – 3, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 18 --have undergone major upgrades. Lots of new trees, realigned lakes, new grass, different pin placements, longer holes,
faster greens, refurbished bunkers – it’s all there. And the clubhouse is better looking and more efficient."We’ve made the course much more pleasing to the eye and much more appealing to the pro player," said Cannon. "The course itself is the major draw for the pros – not the purse, not the locale."
Next year’s Classic, which will run May 22-29, will have great television coverage – 10 hours in all. The prize pool is $4.9 million, with the winner getting $841,000.
