Today’s program

Phil Cannon, tournament director for the FedEx St. Jude Golf Tournament, will take us behind the scenes.

From banker to missionary

Wesley Tomlinson is "giving up the rat race." Sometime in February or March she will move to Costa Rica to do missionary work on a full-time basis. She will be associated with Christ for the City International.

Wesley, filling in for the no-show speaker last Friday, will work with the local churches, but she also will be the hostess for North American teams that visit Central America. She has made several visits to the area before. "We landscaped, shoveled concrete and worked on other projects in the morning, but afternoons were devoted to evangelism," she said.

She is taking care of business – she already has told her boss about her plans – and she’s studying Spanish. "I hope to work in Nicaragua and Panama as well as Costa Rica, and I’m really hoping to have the opportunity to return to Cuba."

Surprises for Weiland

District Governor Dick Weiland is surprised by what he has learned as he visits each club in our district. "There’s a major lack of knowledge about Rotary and what it stands for," he said last week.

"Not only that, more than half the members don’t wear name tags and more than half the clubs don’t have Rotary banners."

He expressed pride in this, his home club, saying, "Our club is a reproduction of what Rotary really is."

Sign up for the party and auction
As the date of our club's Christmas party and silent auction draws near – Saturday, December 4 at 7 p.m. at the lovely Nineteenth Century Club on Union Avenue in Memphis – Jean Patterson still has not received word from some of you. She needs to know if you’re going to attend, whether you will have any guests, and what items you plan to donate to the silent auction.

Even if you will not be attending, your donations to the auction will be more than welcome.

If you’re one of the members whom Jean calls the Shy Guys, get off her shy list by contacting her today and giving her the information she needs to make the Christmas party and auction a success. We have only one more meeting before the party because there’s no meeting Thanksgiving week.

By the way, can anyone top Bill Matthews? He’s going to bring seven guests to the party.

Last week’s meeting
Fred Davis paid tribute to our country’s military veterans in his invocation.

We were happy to greet Tidwell Semmes, our club’s first president. We also were pleased to see Joann Wieland, wife of District Governor Dick Weiland, and Martha Rutherford, wife of former president Gary Rutherford.

Carlton Smith’s spin of a 5 on The Wheel netted $20 for our Foundation – including $5 from Carlton himself. Randolph Reeves volunteered to pay for two misses and Rick James for one.

Bill Eddings sold $88 worth of tickets for the weekly drawing. The winner of the $44 prize was Randolph Reeves.

Our speaker did not show, but Wesley Tomlinson did a fine job (see story elsewhere in this newsletter). Dave Luiken presided.

Member phone numbers

If your phone number is incorrect, please let Henry Francis know. Also let him know if your email address changes.

Coats and blankets
Our coat/blanket drive will conclude next Friday. There is a major need for these items -- they will be used to keep the needy warm this winter. The items do not have to be new, but they should be in good condition. Chairman Wesley Tomlinson is ready to accept your donations.

Personal notes

John May was one of the leaders at a major Boy Scout outing in Middleton.

"Walk the Line," the movie about the life of country legend Johnny Cash, is scheduled for release next spring, probably in April. Hailey Anne Nelson, granddaughter of Henry Francis, will play the part of the young Roseanne Cash. Incidentally Henry will be leaving for Orlando next week – he still works the national tournaments for the American Contract Bridge League. This is his 33rd year on this job.
