Today’s program

Geoff Calkins

11 GEOFF CALKINS
pictureSome people say Geoff Calkins is brave. Could be he's just nuts. Ten years ago, Calkins worked as a labor and employment attorney at a 500-lawyer firm in Washington, D.C. He had an undergraduate degree from Harvard, a law degree from Harvard Law School and a future paved with “Interrogatories," Calkins says.

This did not please him. Calkins really wanted to be a sports columnist. So at age 30, "I came to my senses," -- and found a job covering high school sports in Alabama. Five years later Calkins came to the Commercial Appeal.. He writes four columns a week and still doesn't make as much as he did as a first-year associate at the law firm.

Geoff is not afraid to tell you what he thinks. No doubt he will have a lot to say about basketball -- the Tigers and Grizzlies ready to start their seasons. No doubt he will tell us his impressions of the college football season and the playoff plan

Next week’s program

An insider’s view of the new Collierville Mall.

Last week’s program

William Haltom, last week’s speaker, flanked by President John May and Jack Robinson. Once again Haltom was hilarious with his wealth of stories. He also told us about his new book, “No Controlling Legal Authority.”

Welcome, Yves Calvert

Yves Calvert was officially inducted into our club last week. President John May handled the induction. Yves was sponsored by Lee Whipple. More about Yves next week.

Fireside Chats

Our Fireside Chats are going to different this year. There will be two Fireside Chats – the first on Nov. 11 and the second on Jan. 6. Another difference – we are all going to meet at one site instead of several as in previous years. Thanks to Yves Calvert, both sets of chats will be held in the Tower Room at noon. So start thinking about what you want to say two weeks from today.

Adopt-a-School news

More than 100 students are in the English Second Language classes at Sheffield High, the school we adopted. Altogether they speak 19 different languages. Most have come from African nations. Most learn English very quickly – several of our scholarship winners from Sheffield had no knowledge of English when they came to the United States. Five of the 10 in last year’s senior class either have been or are ESL students.

At last week’s Adopt-a-School committee meeting at Sheffield, Principal Jim Holland told us that the students are ready and willing to help us in our projects – “Just ask,” he said. The school puts heavy emphasis on community service.

Linda Williams, the teacher who works with Adopt-a-School sponsors, and Tamika Carwell, assistant principal, will be our program on Nov. 18. They plan to bring a student with them, probably one of those who took part in this year’s Leadership Conference.

Christmas party

Have you noticed that our Christmas party will be held on a Thursday night? That should make it easy to attend. And it won’t be a late night – you’ll probably be home by 9:30 or 9:45 – at the latest 10.

The party and silent auction will start at 6:30 at the Nineteenth Century Club. Once again our dinner will be catered by the fabulous Castle Retail Group (Rick James). Special entertainment for your enjoyment also is planned.

Several members of the Christmas Party committee are serving as Group Captains on our phone committee.  Each member of the club has been assigned to one of the Group Captains.  They will phone you regarding the party and the silent auction. Our goal is to receive a donation--either an auction item or monetary---from every member.
