Vol. 32, No. 17 Meeting No. 1484 October 27, 2006
Editor: Jean Patterson
Today’s meeting
11:45 a.m. – Chickasaw Country Club:
Dr. Florence Calaway, coordinator at the Memphis City Schools’ Office of
Research and Evaluation. Dr. Calaway will speak about the Youth Development
Collaborative, where she serves as a member of the steering committee.
The Youth Development
Collaborative began in 2005 as an initiative involving more than 20 youth
development agencies. Their mission is to mobilize the Memphis and Shelby
County community to become a supportive, healthy and nurturing community that
understands and values all youth. They have adopted a philosophy of positive
youth development that focuses on building strengths instead of just reducing
problems, risks or deficits.
The Youth Development Collaborative is
facilitating a three-month community-wide dialog focusing on how we can more
fully support our young people, to value our youth and help them thrive. In a
recent survey 7th and 9th graders throughout the Memphis and Shelby County
school system were asked to rate themselves against 40 different assets that are
part of a quality life. The results give a very insightful snapshot of what we
as a community can do to help our youth become successful
adults.
