Fireside Chat report
We received only one report of Fireside Chat activity. The following thorough
recap was received from Jean Patterson, who attended the chat hosted by
Rick James. Others who were present: Leroy Dahler, Al Hollingsworth,
Bill Matthews, John May, Gary Rutherford and Gordon Wilson
After a delicious luncheon buffet, Rick James called the meeting was
called to order. John May gave the invocation and led the Pledge.
Our group focused on four topics:
Meeting location & logistics
The consensus was that the meeting location at Chickasaw Country Club is
excellent. Laura House, who is Chickasaw's social director and one of our two
newest members, can help promote the excellent location. The group suggested
replacing the long tables with round tables for eight. We believe round tables
will lead to improved fellowship.
Ways to stimulate membership growth
Members of the 35-and-under generation tend not to join civic, charitable and
membership organizations. Our current members could mentor younger people,
invite them to attend several of our club meetings and lead them to Rotary
membership. We should contact former members and those on leave of absence to
motivate them to reactivate their membership. Our current members should
introduce business associates and friends to Rotary. Perhaps the team concept,
including a worthwhile prize, could be used again.
3. Maintaining a high quality speaker program
Programs are one of the keys to a successful club. We should consider a speaker
exchange program with other nearby Rotary clubs. Other resources include
reviewing the Memphis magazine who's who in Memphis business list.
4. Promoting participation by all members in club activities
Every member should do a job suited to his or her own
personality. There is something for everyone! It's important to put new members
to work right away. People tend to stay involved when they are given
responsibilities.
"Working is better" -- Chester
was the financial administrator for St. Marys Cathedral for 20 years and nine months and he wishes he still was on the job. "Working is way better than retirement," he said. "You have a sense of accomplishment when you work." Chester, now 88 years old, looks forward to Friday because he enjoys being the Rotary greeter so much. He also enjoys playing solitaire and watching "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune."
Vocational Service Month
President Dave Luiken received the following letter from Frank Givens, chairman of Vocational Services for our District:
Dear President,
Please take a moment to talk to your club about Vocational Service, one of the four avenues of Rotary service. Begin by sharing with them that October is Vocational Service month. This avenue is concerned with:
Adherence to, and promotion of, the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public.
Recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just our own or those that are pursued by Rotarians.
Contributing our vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of the community.
One of the ways that we serve is by employing others to work in our businesses. This is an opportunity and responsibility that we can recognize as very beneficial to our fellow mankind. If you can think of ways that we serve in our daily lives, please tell me and share it with your club.
