Vol. 32, No. 14 Meeting No. 1481
October 6, 2006 Editor: Jean Patterson
Today’s meeting
11:45 a.m. Chickasaw County Club. Beth
Dixon, RISE Foundation (financial literacy). Ray Darby, program
coordinator.
The RISE Foundation is one of
several organizations the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis has helped
establish. RISE was formed as a part of the Community Foundation to help public
housing residents attain financial independence. The organization became
independent in 2002.
Beth Dixon is the president and CEO of
the Rise Foundation, a public charity that empowers low-income residents of
Memphis and Shelby County to build and sustain financial assets. Dixon launched
a second career in 1990 after serving more than a decade as a community
volunteer. She put her advertising and public relations training to work in the
nonprofit world as Development Director for the Memphis Food Bank, where she
developed the popular “Feed the Need” program in area grocery stores. Since
1994, she has worked primarily with private philanthropists as Vice-President of
Development for the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. During her
four-year tenure at the Community Foundation, charitable assets rose from $48m
to $150m. Dixon organized several forums on women and giving which led to the
formation of the Women’s Foundation in 1995. During that same period, women’s
giving at the Community Foundation increased 250%.

Haiti Mission walk-a-thon – today, October
6 and Saturday, the 7th
Got your walking shoes on?
Marty Petrusek asks that
everyone mark our calendars to participate in the annual Walk for Haiti Mission
on Friday and Saturday, October 6 and 7. We have been involved in supporting
the Haiti Mission for several years. The benefit will take place at the Holy
Spirit Catholic Church, 2300 Hickory Crest (Messick Road and Kirby Parkway).
Marty invites everyone in our club to meet at the church at 9:00 a.m. to walk
(at a pace comfortable for all) for one hour. Bring your spouse, significant
other, friends, kids and grandchildren! We’ll have lots of fun and raise money
for the Haiti Mission project at the same time. Contact Marty @ 348-2832 for
more information
Last week’s meeting
President Jim Crone welcomed us to
the 1480th meeting of the Rotary Club of Memphis Central. Thanks to Lee
Whipple, our ex-officio “roving reporter” who sent me a copy of his message
to speaker Scott Hartsell following last week’s meeting.
“Scott, TWO Standing ovations! That is
solid evidence of how much the Memphis Central Rotary Club appreciated your
powerful presentation today at the Chickasaw Country Club. For me, and others,
your shared experiences served as useful, forceful motivation for us to grasp
the nature of the War we’re fighting and must continue to wage. Thanks again for
arranging time to let us have a unique insight into what the War means to a
warrior who has faced the enemy.” Lee Whipple.
Scott is a U.S. Marine and director of
field marketing at Smith & Nephew. He presented a program about his experiences
as a member of the U.S. Special Operations Forces in Iraq, Israel and Bosnia. Ray
Darby was the program coordinator and Lee Whipple introduced the
speaker.
