Today's meeting
10/02/09: 11:45 a.m. – Chickasaw Country Club – Program: Arlender Jones Topic: Identity theft
Program coordinator: Karen Shea

Steps to take to help prevent identity theft

Run a credit report on yourself to see if there are any unknown credit inquiries or unauthorized accounts

Reconcile your check and credit card statements in a timely fashion and challenge any purchases that you did not make.

Limit the number of credit cards you have to reduce exposure and cancel any inactive accounts.

Destroy all unused pre-approved credit card and loan applications. The mailbox thief only has to fill them out and redirect the return address to start using your credit

Never give any important number over the telephone like from your driver's license, credit card, bank account, date of birth or social security number to anyone you don't know.

Minimize exposure of your driver's license number, date of birth, social security number and credit card numbers. If the numbers are requested for check cashing purposes, ask if the business has alternative options such as such as using a check-cashing card

Safeguard your credit, debit, and ATM card receipts and shred them before disposing of them

Shred your bank statements and any tax documents when you dispose of them

Before disposal, shred paycheck stubs and W-2 forms that contain your social security number and often your name and address. This is a common way for dumpster divers to obtain important identification

Scrutinize your utility and subscription bills to make sure the charges are yours

Memorize your passwords and personal identification (PIN) numbers. Keep your PIN numbers somewhere that only you know. Don't give out your PIN numbers or write them on your credit cards or ATM cards.

Keep a list or photocopy all credit and identification cards you carry with you, including front and back, so that you can quickly call the issuers to inform them about missing or stolen cards

Don't give away too much personal information on your family web site.

Protect your mother's maiden name, especially when using family tree tracers and genealogy service web sites. Maiden names are often used as passwords to access accounts over the telephone

Never leave your purse or wallet unattended, no matter where you are! Never leave your purse or wallet in open view in your car, even when the vehicle is locked

Only two weeks remaining to make a donation to the club's Literacy Project!!! Collection of donations for the Literacy Project will continue for the next two weeks, ending after the October 9 meeting. Please make your check payable to “the Rotary Club of Memphis Central Foundation” and give your donation to club treasurer Bill Eddings who is also a member of the Literacy Committee.

Literacy Chair Jean Patterson and committee members Bill Eddings, Tom Michael, Randolph Reeves and Gordon Wilson encourage you to participate in this important fund-raising project! Remember, if someone had not taught you how to read, the messages in the newsletter would look something like this: XVUWPOEN XUEOP WAMP97A

Donations collected for the Literacy Project will be given to the Memphis Literacy Foundation and toward our Rotary District 6800 Dictionary project.

Update from the September 25 meeting: We have collected $400.00 to date---66 2/3% of our $600.00 goal. But I know we can do more, so if you haven't already made a donation for this extremely important project, please plan to do so this Friday or at the October 9th meeting. Together, we can make a difference!

Calling Al, Gordon, Harvey, Karen, R. E. and Tom
If you didn't see our club directory photographer last week, we are looking for you because we still need to take your picture for the new club directory now in preparation. Laura House will have a camera with her at this week's meeting. Please look your best and be ready to smile for Ms. Laura when she says “cheese”!

Holiday Dinner and Silent Auction
This year's annual Holiday Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on Saturday, December 12 at the University Club featuring the MPD Peacemakers as our after-dinner entertainment. For those who are not familiar with the group, the MPD Peacemakers is a quartet of the finest singing voices in the Memphis police department. Here's how you can help to make this event a resounding success:

Attend the event! Mark this date on your calendar and plan to bring friends and family
Actively participate by collecting auction items – we need interesting and useful items at all price ranges, so please help look for donated items from vendors, friends or people you do business with.

Please direct any questions or comments to Jim Crone, chair for the event.

Floyd's Fund raffle
Going into this week's meeting, the winner's portion of the fund has grown to $101.00. After raffle tickets are purchased on Friday, half of the amount raised this week will go directly into Floyd's Fund and the other half into the winner's pot. Let's all participate by purchasing lots of raffle tickets to make the Scholarship Fund grow by leaps and bounds.

The holder of the lucky raffle ticket gets the opportunity to draw from the remaining cards in the deck---now down to less than 50. The winning playing card---when drawn from the cards left in the deck---is the elusive Queen of Hearts.

Remember, if you don't purchase raffle tickets you can't win the prize!
