It’s official:  Richard “Dick” Wieland slated to retire
Today is past district governor Dick Wieland’s last day on the job.  After serving many years at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Dick is hanging up his pilot’s cap in favor of “taking it easy” at home with Joann in Nesbit MS.  What’s wrong with this picture?  If you know Dick, you know that he will never “take it easy” anywhere!  In fact, he’s planning on devoting much of his waking hours to handling his many volunteer Rotary posts both in our club and at the district level.  So don’t be surprised if Dick contacts you, asking you to participate in Rotary leadership conferences, to get involved with our club’s Interact program at Sheffield High School or a list of many other important Rotary projects.  He might even ask you to work with him on a fund-raiser that offers the buyer chocolate Rotary-designed candy.  Way to go, Dick!

Welcome Karen Shea, the newest member of our club
Effective Sept. 22, Karen Shea joined the Rotary Club of Memphis Central.  Karen is a financial planner with Fish and Associates, 699 Oakleaf Office Lane, Suite 105, Memphis TN  38117.  Her office phone is 767-0668.  Karen’s home address is 5000 Edenshire, Memphis TN  38117.  Home phone is 821-0807.  Her birthday is Oct. 6.  All this information and a photo of Karen will be included in the next edition of our club directory.  Again, Karen, we are delighted to have you in our club!

Important:  September is our annual clothes drive month
Doyle Lemons, chair of the Clothes for the Homeless project, encourages you to participate in the September project which will benefit the Memphis Union Mission.  Last year we raised $1,000.00 in monetary donations and clothing.  Our goal for 2006 is to match that number at a minimum and hopefully we will exceed it. Today is the final meeting in September so it is vitally important that you either bring clothing donations or write a check at the meeting!
When Steve Carpenter, director of the Mission, visited with us in early September he told us that the Memphis Union Mission is in special need of men’s clothing.  The Mission distributes on average 4,000 pieces of clothing per month during the fall quarter.  This is a very important project.  Let’s all pitch in to make this year’s clothes drive the most successful one ever!

Haiti Mission walk-a-thon – October 6-7
Marty Petrusek asks that everyone mark our calendars to participate in the annual Walk for Haiti Mission on Friday and Saturday, October 6 and 7.  We have been involved in supporting the Haiti Mission for several years.  The benefit will take place at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2300 Hickory Crest (Messick Road and Kirby Parkway).   Marty invites everyone in our club to meet at the church at 9:00 a.m. to walk (at a pace comfortable for all) for one hour.  Bring your spouse, significant other, friends, kids and grandchildren!  We’ll have lots of fun and raise money for the Haiti Mission project at the same time.  Contact Marty @ 348-2832 for more information

Last week’s meeting
President Jim Crone welcomed us to the 1479th meeting of the Rotary Club of Memphis Central.  David Luiken offered the invocation and led us in the pledge of allegiance to the flag.   Dick Wieland introduced three guests:  Karen Shea, prospective member and guest of John May; Krissie Heuer, administrative office manager of Business Equipment Center and guest of Bill Matthews; and Don Luiken, father of club member David Luiken.  Bill Eddings, who was in charge of Floyd’s Fund ,asked Karen Shea to draw the winning ticket.  There was $41.00 for the club and $40.00 waiting for the holder of ticket #2895.  Congratulations to Bill Eddings  (hum. . . was coercion involved?) who held the lucky ticket.  Bill gleefully accepted the handful of winning cash and then very graciously donated it back to the club.  So that’s $81.00 more for the Scholarship Fund in just one day.  Thanks, Bill!
President Jim announced that the board of directors has approved an additional fund-raising activity for the spring of 2007.  Bill Matthews is in charge of the event which will feature an internationally recognized pianist, Richard Bowling.  More details will follow as time draws closer to the date.  Right now it appears we will schedule this enjoyable evening on either a Friday or Saturday in late April.
We usually save the best for last, and that was definitely how it was last Friday!  Our venerable sergeant at arms, Tom Michael, was sitting at a round table rather than at the head table but he was happy to come forward to perform his “ole sarge” duties.  Tom shared with us that prior to the meeting he had made several deals with some of our members who had missed a few meetings recently.  Al Hollingsworth, Laura House and R. E. Linkous agreed to write $25.00 checks to our club’s Rotary Foundation to benefit the clothes drive in lieu of going onto the Wheel.  What a deal for our charity of the month!  For those who opted for the Wheel, Tom made a spin for $3.00.  My spies tell me that everyone who made a visit to the club treasurer after the Wheel spin donated a $25.00 check rather than take the easy way out.  We appreciate your generosity!

Program coordinator Ray Darby introduced Dr. Gary Patterson, the Information Services Director for CERI, the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information.  Gary is a member of the Mid-America Earthquake Center Leadership Team and an expert in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

In the winter of 1811-12, the central Mississippi Valley was struck by three of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history. Even today, this region has more earthquakes than any other part of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Government agencies, universities, and private organizations are working to increase awareness of the earthquake threat and to reduce loss of life and property in future shocks.

Documentation clearly shows that destructive earthquakes do not happen only in the western United States. In the past 20 years, scientists have learned that strong earthquakes in the central Mississippi Valley are not freak events but have occurred repeatedly in the geologic past. The area of major earthquake activity also has frequent minor shocks and is known as the New Madrid seismic zone.

Earthquakes in the central or eastern United States affect much larger areas than earthquakes of similar magnitude in the western United States. For example, the San Francisco, California, earthquake of 1906 (magnitude 7.8) was felt 350 miles away in the middle of Nevada, whereas the New Madrid earthquake of December 1811 (magnitude 8.0) rang church bells in Boston, Massachusetts, 1,000 miles away. Differences in geology east and west of the Rocky Mountains cause this strong contrast.  More than 4,000 earthquakes have been recorded in the New Madrid Fault since 1976.  On average, 200 are recorded every year.
