Memphis Union Mission, founded in 1945, ministers to the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of homeless men and women. Every day the Mission provides emergency services, such as food, housing, clothing, hygiene and medical care, to some of our city's neediest people.
The Mission also provides recovery and transitional programs that help men, women and families overcome homelessness and become self-sufficient.
Special Notes
To Board members – a reminder that the next board meeting will take place Monday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 at R.E. Linkous’s office. Any interested member is welcome to attend.
Three of our members were accompanied by guests at our last meeting. With Larry Conn was Curtis Williams, a financial analyst for a consulting service group. Krissie Heuer, office manager for the Business Equipment Center, was the guest of Bill Matthews. Bill had high praise for Krissie’s work. And it was Martha Rutherford’s turn to visit along with her husband Gary. Here’s the way Jerry Daws handled the introduction: “Marha Rutherford has a guest today – Gary.”
President John May informs us that the Food Drive will take place in January, not October. Once again the October feature will be the Haiti Walk, raising money for the Haiti hospital we help sponsor. Marty Petrusek, who actually walked the equivalent of a marathon last year, will be chairman once again.
Sergeant-at-Arms Rick James hoped he wouldn’t spin too big a number on the Wheel – he was going to have to pay for three misses. He spun a 3, so he contributed $9 to the Scholarship Fund. Several other members who had missed joined him at the treasurer’s table.
Jim Crone gave the weekly reading on the background and history of the Rotary Foundation.
Rotary Zone meeting
The Rotary Zone meeting will take place Sept. 23-24 at the Hilton Hotel. All Rotarians are urged to attend as many events as they can.
President John May says our club will pay for lunch. However, John needs to know who is planning to attend by Sept. 13 so he can relay the information to District Governor Vijay Surpuriya. Tell John today or email him at jmay@rheaivy.com.

There is no charge for Rotarians from our district, but registration is required.
Saturday, Sept 24 – Banquet. - Charge for the dinner is $45.00 per person.
Please note that all Rotarians must register and pay in advance. If you have any questions or comments, please call Vijay at (901) 756-7183 or e-mail him.
August Book Drive
Our Book Drive was a major success. The goal was 250 books, and as of August 26 Chairman Gordon Wilson had collected 347 (277 books and enough money to buy the rest). Gordon expects the number to jump significantly higher as we approach the special literacy program scheduled for Sept. 30.
The Memphis Literacy Council will use the books to help youngsters from 2 to 6 develop an interest in reading. The books also will be used to help adults who are learning to read English.
September Clothing Drive
The Memphis Union Mission does many things to help the homeless. They feed 150 people a day – 200 on weekends. They give lodging to those they can. They provide them with clothes. And we can help.
We’re holding a clothing drive this month. Chairman Doyle Lemons tells us that the Mission is in dire need of towels, underwear and t-shirts. So search through your dresser drawers and your bathroom closets and fill up those bags.
