Vol. 32, No. 6 Meeting No. 1474 August 11,
2006 Editor: Jean Patterson
Today’s meeting
08/11/06: 11:45 a.m. Chickasaw
Country Club. Dr. Lirah Sabir, Director of Exchange City, will speak on
Junior Achievement’s experimental learning programs.
Dr. Sabir is a retired principal
from Memphis City Schools, with her last assignment at Caldwell Elementary. In
2005, Dr. Sabir joined Junior Achievement to manage Exchange City and lead the
development of other hands-on learning programs. Dr. Sabir also serves as an
adjunct professor at the University of Memphis and Christian Brothers
University.
In 2002 Junior Achievement introduced Exchange
City, an entirely different approach to learning for elementary students.
Children learn how to apply their math, English and social studies lessons as
they prepare to run their own city for a day. These 5th grade students prepare
a business plan, secure a loan and run one of 15 businesses at Exchange City for
first-hand experiences in entrepreneurship and governing a community. In 2007,
JA will expand on this success by introducing Finance Park, a program for middle
grades where students get first-hand experience in preparing a budget, managing
their money and preparing for life on their own.
