Golf tournament a major success

Our annual golf tournament was a major success, with 15 teams of four battling for the prizes. The money raised will go far in providing the wherewithal for next year’s Memphis Central scholarships and character achievement awards. Tournament Chairman Bill Matthews estimates that the tournament will produce more than $6000 for the Scholarship Fund – perhaps the best return ever. Congratulations to the members who contributed $125 as hole sponsors.

Early-morning rain worried the players, but the showers stopped plenty early enough to allow comfortable play.

The best score of the day was turned in by the team captained by Mark Matthews (Bill Matthews Sr., Peter Matthews and Howard Prince). Their 11-under par won first place in Flight B. Not bad for a team that included three senior citizens. Second with 9 under were Roger Kelley, Jonathon McAlister, Ron Newbill and Drew McAlister. Drew, grandson of Jeff Jones, also won a putter by driving closest to the hole on the par 3 eighth. He missed winning the $5000 prize for a hole-in-one by only one and a half feet. Many thanks to the pro shop at Chickasaw for donating the putter.

Chris McDermott’s foursome took top honors in Flight A, but not without a battle. His team tied with the Dick Wieland quartet at 9 under par, But in the playoff that followed, Chris was victorious. Playing with Chris were Mark Yok ell, Michael Robinson and Nathan Pera. Also on Dick’s team were Mark Richardson and Charles Bell.

The victor in the putting contest was Sam Massey, who won a driver.

All 60 players were given two free shots in the putting contest, two mulligans and a gift bag. Each golfer also received a door prize. The luncheon was great, and so was the Bluebell ice cream, provided by Dave Luiken, that was wolfed down after play ceased.

The committee that put this tournament together consisted of Bill Matthews, Bert Canfield, Jeff Jones, Dave Luiken and Chris McDermott. Helping out with the work necessary on the day of the tournament were Gordon Wilson, Carlton Smith, Floyd McDaniel and Henry Francis.
