Wesley Tomlinson returns to Memphis

If you didn’t sign up to receive Wesley’s Mission in Motion newsletter before she left Memphis 14 months ago you may not know that she has returned to Memphis.  After serving with Christ for the City Ministries in Costa Rica, Wesley received a call to serve as Director of Children’s Ministry at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Memphis.  She returned home on May 17.

Here’s what Wesley had to say about the move back home.  “While it will be difficult to leave (Costa Rica), I am looking forward to the new work to which God has called me.  On July 1, I will join the staff of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Memphis as the Director of Children’s Ministry.   Many of you know that this is the church my sister and her family attend.  I am so thankful for this opportunity and cannot imagine anything more important or fulfilling than the privilege of being part of the spiritual formation of my precious nephews, Patrick and Walker!”

Hopefully, Wesley will become an active member of our club again, or at least be a frequent visitor!

From Inside the Vault ----   26 years ago:  July 11, 1980

From the Rotarian newsletter:  Out-going president Ed Hemann made presentations to outstanding Rotarians who have contributed significantly to the club.  The first plaque went to Jim Vanderburg for his outstanding service and contributions to the Whitehaven Rotary Club.  Dick Goldberg and Henry Francis of the ACBL both received the Medal of Merit for printing the Whitehaven Rotarian newsletter every week.  Bob Neal, our program chairman, received the Medal of Merit for the fine array of programs we enjoyed during the past Rotary year.  Jeff Jones received the Distinguished Service Award for his service as club secretary.  We sincerely appreciate the dedicated service of these fine Rotarians and the inspired leadership of Ed Hemann during the past year.  Thank you all!  (bold-face type – members of our club 26 years later.)

Last week’s meeting
President John May welcomed us to Meeting 1464.  Tom Michael offered the invocation and led us in the pledge of allegiance.  Larry Conn asked Jack Robinson to introduce his guest, Scott Rozanski who is a prospective member.

Sgt.at Arms Rick James was “back in the saddle again”—no more amnesty for anyone who abuses The Wheel!  Jay Hudson was successful, however, in bribing the ole sergeant.  He offered a complimentary one night stay at the Peabody, the South’s Grand Hotel, and dinner for two at Chez Philippe.  The prize is earmarked to be given away at the annual club golf tournament on Tuesday.  Chris McDermott was discovered sans Rotary pin but was let off the hook since he is running the golf tournament next week.  Who did the sergeant put on The Wheel?  President John May for missing the kick-off District Conference luncheon a couple of weeks ago.  DeeDee Fowler also stepped up to the plate and paid her $4.00 fine.

Bill Eddings conducted the weekly Floyd’s Fund drawing.  Leroy Dahler held the lucky ticket and took home $37.00 which represented half of the money raised for the week’s Scholarship raffle.  Congratulations, Leroy!

Chris McDermott announced that as of May 12th, 25 teams have signed up to play in the annual Memphis Central Rotary Club golf tournament.  This is a reduction in the number we expected to actually play golf.  Others who planned to participate but now find they can’t attend have graciously donated money, prizes or are hole sponsors.  Even so, we have the largest number of players ever to take part in the event   Chris repeated his plea from the previous meeting, asking for additional volunteers to help deliver drinks to the golfers while the tournament is in play and to referee players who take part in the putting contest and other activities.

Chris McDermott and Marty Petrusek gave a review of the District’s annual Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) which was held recently at Whispering Woods conference center in Olive Branch.  The YLC was created by our own club many years ago.  It grew to such proportions that the District became the sponsor.  We are proud to lay claim to originating such an important event for area youth---the leaders of tomorrow.

The slide presentation offered us a glimpse into the activities and participants of the three and one half day event.  This year 120 delegates---all juniors at high schools in Shelby county and north Mississippi---were comprised of 60% young ladies and 40% young men.  The daytime programs were coordinated by students in the Emerging Leaders program at the University of Memphis.  Eighteen college sophomores and three professors hosted six intensive (but fun) work sessions.  Topics included making the transition from high school to college, time/stress management, setting goals, networking, ethics, decision-making, creating a resume and the importance of diversity.

In addition to participating in the day programs, delegates enjoyed meeting new people and making friendships that can last a lifetime and letting the creative juices flow!  Kudos go to O. W. Smith from the Memphis East Rotary club who served as conference chair and to our own Chris McDermott and Marty Petrusek, conference co-chairs.  Everyone involved in the project did an outstanding job and we are extremely proud of their efforts.
