Last week’s meeting
Scholarship Awards Day was celebrated at
the club’s luncheon last Friday. President John May welcomed us to
Meeting 1463. Bob Neal offered the invocation and led us in the pledge
of allegiance. Harvey Marcom introduced visiting Rotarian Bob Mercer,
a member of the Memphis East club.
Sgt.at Arms Rick James issued a
week of amnesty in honor of Scholarship Awards Day. Bill Eddings
conducted the weekly Floyd’s Fund drawing. Bert Canfield held the lucky
ticket and graciously donated his half of the $65.00 collected for the raffle
back to the Scholarship Fund. Thank you, Bert!
Chris McDermott announced that as
of May 5th, 32 teams have signed up to play in the annual Memphis Central Rotary
Club golf tournament. This is the largest number of players ever to participate
in the event. Chris reports there are still places remaining for several more
teams. Chris also asked for additional volunteers to help deliver drinks to the
golfers while the tournament is in play and to referee players who take part in
special contests.
Scholarship Committee chairman Jerry
Daws started the program by introducing committee members including Bert
Canfield, Doyle Lemons, Carlton Smith and Henry Francis (who was
unable to be with us on Friday). On the last Saturday of April the committee
interviewed 13 local seniors from an original field of more than 50 to determine
who would receive the six $1500 scholarships given annually by our club. As
always, it was a wonderful eye-opening morning for Chairman Jerry Daws
and the committee. Choosing six of the 13 was a most difficult task – it was
clear that all 13 finalists are fine students who deserve assistance as they
start their college careers.
Jerry shared information about each of the
six scholarship winners. Their biographical sketches were included in last
week’s Rotarian. To recap, these are our scholarship winners for 2006: Derek
Hill, Whitehaven High. Derek is ranked fourth in his class of 350. Another
winner is also from Whitehaven High: Salama Shelton, who is ranked 18th
in the class.
Suzanne Tran, from Sheffield High
School is another scholarship recipient. Suzanne ranks second in her class of
140. Jonathan Toles, Bishop Byrne High School, is ranked third in a
class of 39. Britney Holmes is a senior at Woodale High School and is
ranked seventh in a class of 276. Rounding out the scholarship recipients is
Alison Hardeman of SBEC (Southern Baptist Educational Center). Alison is
first in her class of 49 and was named class valedictorian. Alison’s picture
was included in the DeSoto Appeal section of the Commercial Appeal as one of six
valedictorians representing the six high schools in DeSoto county.
Jerry told the audience about the history
involved in our efforts to raise money for the Scholarship Fund. Several
activities have long been major fund-raisers throughout the year for this
purpose. Projects include the annual golf tournament, Christmas party and
silent auction and the weekly Floyd’s Fund raffle. Jerry introduced
Floyd McDaniel, the man who for many, many years ran the weekly raffle. If
Floyd thought the money raised for the week was not up to par, he felt no
embarrassment in making the rounds of the luncheon tables, asking members who
hadn’t bought tickets to “ante up”. Floyd’s persistence and dedication led to
the raffle being named the Floyd’s Fund in his honor. Thanks again,
Floyd, for all that you have done and continue to do to insure that the
Scholarship Fund increases in size year after year.
Jerry called on Gary Rutherford to
conclude the awards presentation by offering the students words of
encouragement. Gary took his cue from the book, “Seizing the Moment” written by
his long time friend Jim Moore, a Methodist minister. One of the Scripture
verses referred to in the book is Hebrews 13:21 when the apostle Paul wrote
“Make you perfect in every good work to do his will.
. .” Gary explained that while no
one except Jesus is perfect, the meaning of “perfect” in the Greek means age or
maturity, to develop. Gary encouraged our scholarship winners to develop the
tools to assist them in improving themselves as they go through life.
