Scholarship Awards Day – May 5, 2006

The Scholarship Committee interviewed 12 local seniors to determine who would receive the six $1500 scholarships given annually by our club. As always, it was a wonderful eye-opening morning for Chairman Jerry Daws and his committee – Bert Canfield, Henry Francis, Doyle Lemons and Carlton Smith. Choosing six of the 12 was a most difficult task – it was clear that all 12 finalists are fine students who deserve assistance as they start their college careers.

Here are brief biographical looks at our Rotary Scholarship winners.

Derek Hill, Whitehaven High, has been accepted to the two schools in which he is most interested – Washington University in St. Louis and Vanderbilt. His goal is to be an entrepreneur, so it’s not surprising that he reached the national finals in DECA competition. During his high school years he was involved in many activities, both in and out of school. He played on the tennis team but tried for scholarships strictly on his academic achievements.

He also was accepted at Rhodes, but he wants to broaden his horizons by being away from Memphis for a while. However, he plans to return to Memphis to start his business career after he finishes his education. When asked what person, living or dead, he would like to spend a day with, his choice was Condoleeza Rice.

Salama Shelton, Woodale High, is very much the sports enthusiast. She captained the lacrosse team and also competed in tennis, track, basketball, softball and baseball. But becoming an architect is her goal, and she plans to achieve it at either Tuskegee University in Alabama or Prairie View University in Texas. Each school has a major program in architecture that requires five or six years of study.

Salama is very much a vegetarian – she has never consumed meat or fish or any dairy product. She believes her excellent health is due to this regimen.

Why did she choose architecture? She enjoys math and designing, and she feels they go well together in this field. Her choice of someone to spend a day with was Martin Luther King.

Suzanne Tran, Sheffield High, wrote a most interesting essay – what’s right and what’s wrong about Memphis. She feels that Memphis is a great place to live and could be even better with a few changes she would try to make if she ever became mayor of the city.

Once again Sheffield has offered an interesting student with a Vietnamese background. She plans to go to the University of Memphis with a major in psychology. She will be the first in her family ever to attend college.

Suzanne expects to be married soon – her fiancé plans to attend Southwest to learn to be an accountant. Her choice of someone to spend a day with was Anne Frank.

Jonathan Toles, Bishop Byrne, has received all his education so far from Catholic schools. Where does he plan to go to college? Holy Cross, a Catholic college run by Jesuit priests. What does he want to do with his life? Become a Baptist minister! He already is a deacon and a preacher at his church. He also points out that Holy Cross has a good law school, and he plans to work as an intern in a law office. When he comes back to Memphis, he wants to be a minister and a lawyer.

Jonathan was student of the year and he also won the athlete award of the year. He competed in football, basketball, golf, soccer and track. In addition he was very active in volunteer work. Not only that – he was senior class president. He attended World Youth Day in Germany where he saw the Pope. He would like to have the chance to spend a day with Martin Luther King.

Britney Holmes, Woodale, wants to be the Oprah Winfrey of Memphis. Broadcasting is her dream, and she already does some at the school and on the education channel. She plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with majors in communications and education. She says math is her favorite subject – “There’s only one correct answer!”

She was a member of the cheerleading squad. Her long-term goal is to get Memphians to enjoy Memphis – something she feels she can do as a broadcaster on a local TV station. The person she would have liked to spend a day with was Elvis Presley.

Alison Hardeman, SBEC, wants to teach a science, probably physics, at SBEC after she gets her degree at Christian Brothers. She was captain of the Knowledge Bowl team, valedictorian of her class and a member of the band. In college she plans to take a five-year program majoring in science and education. She is also interested in doing research work. She will be the first of her family ever to attend college.

She has done a lot of missionary work and she plans to continue doing so. Who would she like to have the chance to spend a day with? C.S. Lewis, the author.
