team. Contact David Luiken to sponsor a hole. Bill Eddings is
collecting items for souvenir bags for tournament participants.
Last Week’s Meeting
Instead of holding a regularly-scheduled
meeting at Chickasaw Country Club, we met at noon
at the Memphis Hilton for the kick-off luncheon with other Rotarians attending
the District 6800 Conference: Memphis & the Delta – Celebrating Our Musical
Heritage. More than 20 members from our club braved the stormy weather to join
other members of District 6800 for the luncheon.
Several club members including Floyd McDaniel, Andy
Peters, Carlton Smith and editor Jean Patterson were at a
table with former club member Tracy Chisum. Tracy is currently a member
of the Germantown Rotary Club. She sends her best to members of our club. At
one time Tracy’s husband, George was a member (and former president) of our
club, too. Former District Governor Dick Wieland and wife Joann were
seated at the head table.
Others from our club at the conference luncheon include John
Bennett, Bert Canfield, Jim Crone, Fred Davis, Jerry Daws (taking
photographs as always!), Jeff Jones, Doyle Lemons, Chris McDermott,
assistant district governor Tom Michael, Bob Neal, Marty Petrusek,
Gary Rutherford, Mabel Rutherford, John Shepherd and Gordon Wilson..
Our club may have had the largest representation of any club in the District at
this important event. We should be very pleased and I urge you to keep up the
good work! P.S. If I omitted your name from this list please don’t take
offense. It only means that I didn’t see you in the crowd of people gathered
for the luncheon. Also, David Luiken intended to join us but was
unexpectedly called away to a grocer’s meeting in Jackson, TN.
District Governor Vijay introduced Shelby County Mayor
A. C. Wharton who made a surprise visit to the luncheon. He was attending
another meeting in the hotel but was pleased to stop by to speak to our group.
He gave a humorous but inspiring impromptu talk about the important work Rotary
is doing in several areas including literacy. This is a topic dear to the
Mayor’s heart as well as ours. As he made his way down from the podium, the
Mayor received a standing ovation.
John Germ, Rotary international vice-president 2004-05,
was the scheduled keynote speaker for the afternoon. John was unexpectedly
delayed in Chattanooga due to inclement weather. Filling in was Louis
Marciano who did an excellent job. His talk was also filled with humor as
he talked about the importance of Rotary and what it has meant to him for the 34
years he has been a member of our organization. For twenty-two of those years
he has had perfect attendance!
A message from our District Governor
As of this date, we have not received
any applications for the Ambassadorial Scholarships for the 2005-2006 Rotary
year.
As most of you know, every year our
district selects two prospective students to go abroad for higher education.
Most of these scholarships are for the period of one academic year and are
worth approximately $26,000.
The District Scholarships committee would
like to get as many qualified applicants as possible. If you know somebody who
is interested in applying for the scholarship, please let me know. I will be
happy to send them the application form. They can also download the application
from the RI website.

Rosentreter, Committee Chair - Ambassadorial Scholarships.
