Lee Whipple offered the invocation and led us in the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Jim Crone introduced visitors and guests including Tom Holloman, guest of Lee Whipple, Judy Clark, sister and guest of Rick James and Ray Darby, former Rotarian from Ohio and now president of Junior Achievement of Memphis. Ray plans to join our club in the near future. Announcements: Jerry Daws, Scholarship Committee chair, reported that letters to school principals along with scholarship application forms have been mailed to all participating schools. Carlton Smith reminded us about the Character Achievement Awards luncheon that will take place on Friday, April 7. The 2006 Scholarship Awards program will be held on Friday, May 5. Chris McDermott gave an update on the annual golf tournament fund-raiser. This year’s event takes place on Tuesday, May 16 in the afternoon on the East Course of Wyndyke Country Club. Meals and beverages will be served. A maximum of 32 teams can be accommodated. It would be wonderful if we could reach this 32-team limit. So far Chris and Bert Canfield have already signed up six teams. If the rest of us will work just as hard as they have, this could be the most successful year ever for our golf tournament! In honor of old St. Paddy’s Day, Sergeant-at-arms Rick James offered up some facts about St. Patrick and the Emerald Isle. We learned (or were reminded) that St. Patrick was born in Great Britain and was spirited away to Ireland by pirates in the 5th century. Since there were no snakes in Ireland, St. Patrick never drove them out. However, more importantly, he did spread the gospel among the inhabitants of Ireland who at that time worshipped the sun and other inanimate objects. Rick ended his presentation by asking if anyone knew what happens to those who kiss the Blarney Stone. Jean Patterson said that she visited Ireland about ten years ago, even went to Blarney to see the famed castle and Blarney Stone. But she couldn’t remember what happens when someone actually climbed high enough in the castle to kiss the Stone. (She and her husband, Jim, both climbed to the top of the stairs to see the Stone.) Rick said if you kiss the Stone you receive the gift of gab! Turning serious, Rick spun the Rotary Wheel to issue a fine to those who forgot to wear their Rotary pin or who missed a meeting or two. The wheel spinner landed on the number “4” and as always, there were several Rotarians who visited the treasurer’s table to pay their fines. Bill Eddings collected $65.00 ($32.00 to the winner and $33.00 for the club) in the Floyd’s Fund raffle. The lucky ticket holder was our guest speaker, Harvey Cook. He followed in the Carlton Smith and R. E. Linkous tradition by donating his win back to the club’s Scholarship Fund. Thanks, Harvey, we appreciate your generosity. Bill Eddings introduced guest speaker Harvey Cook of Merrill Lynch. Harvey began his talk by asking this question: how many stocks are in the Standard and Poor 500? Harvey managed to stump several guessers, but the always-alert Tom Michael knew the correct answer: 500. Harvey tossed a box of golf balls in Tom’s direction for being the first to give the right answer. In a more serious vein, Harvey shared the most important investment decisions we can make: *define individual goals and timeframe *match asset allocation to your goals *make sure your portfolio is properly diversified *rebalance your portfolio Also, be sure to remember the “ADR” formula: Allocate, Diversify and Rebalance Club meetings in the surrounding area For the convenience of our members we’re providing an updated list of nearby club meetings where we can make up our misses.
