Last week’s program

Mike Flemming, talk show host of WREC 600 AM, gave a lively, interesting presentation to us last week. He let us know that he is proud to be a conservative. He discussed some of the hot political issues of the day revolving around Memphis, Mayor Herenton and Congressman John Ford. Club members fired many questions at him and he did a great job fielding answers. It is very obvious that Mike loves Memphis and the community and is very passionate about what he does as a conservative talk show host.

Sign up for our golf tournament

Make sure you circle June 2 on your calendar. That’s the day of our annual golf tournament, one of our two major fund-raising activities of the year. The event will take place at the Fox Meadows Golf Course. The original suggested dates were unfavorable for many of our members.

Sign up as a player and round up some of your friends to complete a foursome. The tournament is a great social event, with camaraderie beforehand and an ice cream party afterwards. Add to that the number of fine prizes that will be awarded.

Once again Bert Canfield, Bill Matthews and Jeff Jones are in charge. If you have any questions, they’re the guys to ask.

Youth Leadership Conference

Once again our club will sponsor three high school juniors at the annual District Youth Leadership Conference at Whispering Hills in Olive Branch from March 30 to April 1.

The conference is one of the high points of the year for the District. It brings together potential future leaders from most of the clubs in the District. The youngsters get the opportunity to see how kids from other areas live as they intermingle for three days. Many new friendships are formed. At the same time the youngsters learn how to be leaders. Many interactive programs illustrate how to handle difficult situations and how to help others find their way. Our own Marty Petrusek will show the attendees some tactics aimed at improving their memories.

Some of our newer members may be unaware that it was our club that first conceived and implemented these leadership conferences. The program, under the direction of the large Brick Brickell, were an instant success. The district was so impressed that they decided that every youngster in the District should have a chanced to participate, so they added the program to their District agenda. The conference as it is done today is a true reflection of the program our club started many years ago.

Justin Crone, a junior at Houston High and the son of Jim Crone, is one of the three chosen to represent our club. The other two are juniors at Sheffield High, our adopted school. They are Jalissa Johnson, battalion commander of the school ROTC, and Tristan Pinkney, a member of the student council and the girls’ soccer team.

Last week’s guests

Four members brought guests to last week’s meeting. Mary Davis was the guest of Fred Davis. With Bob Neal was his wife Charlotte. Jim Van Eynde was with Jerry Daws. And Doc Harris was accompanied by Pam Harris.

Upcoming events

March 30-April 1: The annual District Youth Leadership Conference at Whispering Hills in Olive Branch.

April 15 is the date for the annual Character Achievement Awards program. Committee members work hard over several months using an impressive review process to select two eighth-graders and two sophomores who have overcome major obstacles.

April 22-23: The annual District 6800 Conference will take place at the Hilton Hotel, Memphis. Our own Dick Wieland is District Governor, so our club will serve as host. Jerry Daws is chairman. Jean Patterson will be in charge of the Silent Auction, a task she has handled ever since the District started having these auctions.

May 5-7: GSE Team from Nottingham, England, will visit the Memphis area. Rotarian families are needed to handle local hosting duties. Please consider volunteering to serve as a host during the team’s stay.

May 13: Annual Scholarship Program at which six high school seniors will be awarded $1500 scholarships. The committee, headed once again by Jerry Daws, selects the winners on criteria based on grade scores, SAT results, activities and an essay. The top dozen candidates are then interviewed individually by the committee before the final selections are made.

June 2 has been set as the date for annual golf tournament, one of our two major fund-raising activities of the year. The event will take place at the Fox Meadows Golf Course. The original suggested dates were unfavorable for many of our members.

Sign up early!

If you haven’t already signed up for the District Conference, now’s the time to do it. District Governor Dick Wieland is hoping to see all of us there for at least one of the sessions. Fill out your application and write a check. The registration cost now is $35, but the club will reimburse you for $25.

The conference will take place at the Hilton Inn here in Memphis on April 22 and 23. Our club is the host for the conference because Dick Wieland is our District Governor. This marks the third time our club has been the host – John Bennett was District Governor twice.

Tireless Jerry Daws is conference chairman. He also is busy as chairman of the club scholarship committee and as a committee member for the Character Achievement program.

Chickasaw Country Club will not be available for our usual club meeting on April 22. However, making up will be easy since attendance at the conference counts for attending a meeting.
