Farewell, dear friend Floyd
From the Commercial Appeal: “Floyd McDaniel 89, of Memphis, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2009. He was a member of Berclair Baptist Church, Berclair Masonic Lodge, the Rotary Club, American Legion, and the Al Chymia Shine. Mr. McDaniel was an Army World War II veteran. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances L. McDaniel, a daughter, Bonnie McDaniel; son, Floyd D. McDaniel; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. McDaniel was preceded in death by one grandson.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, December 29, at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, December 30, also at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Entombment was in the Memorial Park Mausoleum. “
Floyd McDaniel was a devoted member of our Rotary Club for many years. His dedication to raising funds for our Scholarship Fund by selling raffle tickets at our weekly meetings was legend. So much so, that the raffle several years ago was named Floyd's Fund in his honor.
Gone---but not forgotten
The year 2009 will be remembered for many reasons but for the Rotary Club of Memphis Central it will be noted for the loss of four of our long-standing and dearly loved members.
Floyd McDaniel is the most recent loss. As mentioned in the previous article, his tireless efforts to raise funds for the Scholarship Fund (now called Floyd's Fund) will be remembered and continue to live on as long as this club exists.
Lee Whipple passed away in November. His work to perpetuate our Rotary club is evident today as we look around at others sitting at the tables with us at our meetings. Several of the members Lee brought into the club are active now. Others moved on to other cities as job responsibilities required them to transfer from Memphis. Lee's love for the Rotary organization was tremendous. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all.
Fred Davis---who passed away in August---was a quiet, low-key gentleman. Fred faithfully supported our fund-raising activities and always donated several items each year to the silent auction. He enjoyed serving on the Literacy Committee with your editor. Fred gave interesting books to our annual book drive to benefit the Memphis Literacy Council. Fred also gave of his time by attending our weekly meetings, never missing unless he was ill or out of town.
The fourth club member to pass away in 2009 was dear Chester Perry. Like Lee Whipple, Chester was wheel-chair bound for many years but he never let that get in the way of Service to Others. Chester was the club's official greeter for so long that I have lost count of the years. While he was active, those who attended our meetings could depend on Chester to be in the “greeter's seat” every week to welcome members and guests alike. He gave a warm and winning smile to everyone who entered the meeting room.
Chester, Fred, Lee and Floyd---may you rest in God's perfect peace forever.
